A map of the named sites around the island. From the West End, it's a short, 3-10 minute boat ride to all of the sites on the north side of the island. Mary's Place, one the world's top 10 dive sites is the jewel of the southern side of the island. Roatan has sights for whatever kind of dive you like: reef walls, wrecks, crevices and swim throughs, or sandy patches with an abundance of micro species. It's all here!
Roatan's expat community has an amazingly informative Facebook group. It has a wealth of information! People on and off the island post questions, and accurate, current information is provided to share resources with locals and visitors alike. It is one of the ways I keep in touch with what is going on down there when I am away from the island.
RMP's website is an excellent resource if you are interested in how Roatan's reef is being protected. Founded in 1988, the RMP has created the best example of a marine protected area in the Caribbean. They and other organizations on the island engage in conservation efforts, including educating the dive community on safe practices to aid in the eradication of invasive species. In other words, we hunt lion fish. Come learn how, and enjoy the ceviche!
There are many opportunities Roatan's visitors to get hands on experience with ocean conservation. Regular beach cleanups, educational lectures and volunteer opportunities abound with various organizations based on the island and throughout the Mesoamerican Reef region.
